Uncertainty in Nearshore Sand Bar Migration

چکیده

A coupled nearshore hydrodynamics and sediment transport model with adjoint-based uncertainty quantification has been applied to sand bar morphodynamics in the Duck94 field experiment (Duck, NC). The model, which is based on previously established physical process formulas, capable of producing accurate predictions migration during experiment. However, reasonable perturbations inputs—namely initial conditions, boundary calibration coefficients—can produce a range predictions. This taken represent potential for scenarios where one or more inputs are poorly constrained. Experiments presented that quantify relative impact different input types uncertainty, results contrasted accretive versus erosive wave conditions. During conditions (shoreward migration), dominated by growth errors owing positive feedbacks model. In contrast, (seaward there smaller instead coefficients. thus point qualitative differences nature morphodynamic under greater role internal error (positive feedbacks) physics being important

Toward modeling turbulent suspension of sand in the nearshore

[1] We present two depthand phase-resolving models, based on singleand two-phase approaches for suspended sediment transport under water waves. Both models are the extension of a wave hydrodynamic model Cornell Breaking Wave and Structure (COBRAS). In the two-phase approach, dilute two-phase mass and momentum equations are calculated along with a fluid turbulence closure based on balance equati...

Sand column impact onto a Kolsky pressure bar

A laboratory-based methodology to launch cylindrical sand slugs at high velocities is developed. The methodology generates well-characterised soil ejecta without the need for detonation of an explosive; this laboratory-based tool thereby allows for the experimental investigation of the soil-structure events. The experimental set-up comprises a launcher with a cylindrical cavity and a piston to ...

The sand dunes migration patterns in Mesr Erg region using satellite imagery analysis and wind data

Understanding the situation, behavior and the nature of sand dunes and also their location, transport and deposition are very important. On the other hand, the importance of sand dunes is due to the impacts that they have on water and soil resources, flora and fauna and human infrastructure. This study, looks at the development patterns of sand dunes in Mesr erg region. In the first part, data ...

BAR domain competition during directional cellular migration.

While directed cellular migration facilitates the coordinated movement of cells during development and tissue repair, the precise mechanisms regulating the interplay between the extracellular environment, the actin cytoskeleton, and the overlying plasma membrane remain inadequately understood. The BAR domain family of lipid binding, actin cytoskeletal regulators are gaining greater appreciation...

Occurrence of Escherichia coli and enterococci in Cladophora (Chlorophyta) in nearshore water and beach sand of Lake Michigan.

Each summer, the nuisance green alga Cladophora (mostly Cladophora glomerata) amasses along Lake Michigan beaches, creating nearshore anoxia and unsightly, malodorous mats that can attract problem animals and detract from visitor enjoyment. Traditionally, elevated counts of Escherichia coli are presumed to indicate the presence of sewage, mostly derived from nearby point sources. The relationsh...
